Good morning. It's Sunday the 28th of April and here is the GB2RS news
broadcast, prepared by the RSGB and intended for all radio amateurs and
short-wave listeners.

Next Saturday, the 4th of May, the Radio Society of Great Britain
invites members and non-members to visit its Headquarters at Potters
Bar, just off the M25 in Hertfordshire. The popular Annual Open Day
includes guided tours of the HQ offices, the National Amateur Radio
Museum and Library, the GB3RS shack, traders, staff, committees, the RA
and SSL. Refreshments will be available. A map can be found in the RSGB
Call Book, or is obtainable by calling the RadCom office on 01707
659015, or faxing 01707 649503. Non-members of the Society are
especially welcome to come along and see what the RSGB does for them.

The rules for this year's QRP Fun Run, which takes place in conjunction
with the Yeovil QRP Convention, appeared on page 75 of April's RadCom.
Please note the following additional details about contacts. Stations
may be worked once only on each band during the event but Fun Run Bonus
Stations - all operating each evening randomly for one hour on each band
- may be worked once each evening per band. The event takes place from

The sporadic-E season got off to a lively start last Sunday, the 21st of
April, reports Martin Harrison, G3USF, chairman of the RSGB Propagation
Studies Committee. Between approximately 1100 and 1430 UTC, 6 metre
operators in most parts of the UK were able to work into Italy, former
Yugoslavia and the Czech Republic with S9 reports. Around these times,
many contacts with the same areas and with Austria were also made on
10m. However, it is likely to be several weeks before such openings
become almost daily occurrences.

Also from G3USF, this time wearing his IARU Region 1 Beacon Co-ordinator
hat, is news that another new beacon has joined the International Beacon
Project worldwide network. 4X6TU in Tel Aviv is now operational on
14100, 18110, 21150, 24930 and 28200kHz with stepped powers of up to 100
watts to a vertical antenna. This is on a three minute cycle with 10
second transmissions on each frequency in turn. It joins ZS6DN, LU4AA
and YV5B while JA2IGY is expected on air soon. The network, once it is
completed next year, will comprise 17 five band beacons synchronised by
satellite control.

An RSGB Regional Open Meeting has been arranged by Fred Stewart, G0CSF,
Council Member for Zone C, which covers the south-east of England and
East Anglia. The meeting will take place on Sunday, the 26th of May, at
Rivenhall Village Hall, Church Road, Rivenhall, Witham, Essex. RSGB
President Peter Sheppard, G4EJP, is due to attend, along with Executive
Vice President Ian Kyle, GI8AYZ. For further details contact G0CSF on

The following statement has been issued by the Council of the RSGB:

Council wishes to inform members of the Society that  G Reilly-Cooper,
G0MAM, no longer acts as the RSGB Emergency Communications Officer.
Council wishes to place on record the Society's appreciation of Mr
Reilly-Cooper's past efforts in this field of amateur activity.

The vacancy for the position of RSGB Emergency Communications Officer
will be advertised in the Society's journal and all applications will be
treated on their merits.

Until such time as an appointment is made, queries relating to
talk-through permits should go to the Licensing Advisory Committee
Chairman I D Suart, GM4AUP, whose address is correctly shown in the
current RSGB Call Book.

Any other enquiry relating to Raynet matters should be directed to the
Membership Liaison Committee via the Chairman, I J Kyle, GI8AYZ, at his
home address also shown correctly in the Call Book.

Council reiterates its wholehearted commitment to the role of Raynet
groups in training for and providing emergency communications and will,
to the best of its ability, continue to fully support all groups wishing
to be affiliated to the Society.

To this end, the Radio Society of Great Britain proposes to host an open
meeting later this year in order that all who have an interest in the
field of emergency communications may make a contribution to the
formulation of a policy for the future.

The venue and date of this meeting will be published well in advance.

Now some items of HF DX news from the weekly RSGB DX News Sheet, which
is edited by Chris Page, G4BUE:

>From Menorca in the Balearic Islands, ED6IDM will be active over the
weekend of the 4th and 5th of May.

>From Grenada, J37Q and J37P are operational until the 7th of May at the
low end of the 20 metre band.

And from Svalbard, OZ8RO will sign JW5HE until next Sunday,
concentrating on the WARC bands, especially 30 metres.

Two Japanese islands will be activated this weekend:

On Uji Archipelago, JA6VZB/6 will operate today, the 28th, using CW on
7001, 10115 and 14040 kHz.

And on Tsushima, JA6WIE will operate until the 30th of April, and JR0GFM
will operate from the 5th to the 7th of May.

Next the Rally News:

Today, the 28th of April, the Marske-by-the-Sea Radio Rally is held at
the Marske Leisure Centre, in the High Street, Marske-by-the-Sea, near
Redcar. The event features the usual traders and a bring and buy stand.
Doors open at 11.00am.

The British Amateur Television Club Rally also takes place today, the
28th, at the Sports Connexion in Coventry. The event features outside
broadcast TV displays, traders and a bring and buy stand. Doors open at
10.00am, or 9.30am for disabled visitors.

Next Sunday, the 5th of May, the Anglo-Scottish Rally is at Tait Hall,
Kelso. Doors open at 11am, or 10.30am for disabled visitors. Talk-in is
on S22. The event features trade stands, a bring and buy stall and a

The National Vintage Communications Fair also takes place next Sunday,
the 5th, at the NEC Birmingham. There will be more than 300 dealers
selling items relating to early technology and doors are open from

On Monday, the 6th of May, the Dartmoor Radio Rally takes place at
Yelverton Memorial Hall, Meavy Lane, Yelverton, Devon. Doors open at

Also on Monday, the 6th, the Mid Cheshire Amateur Radio Society Rally
takes place at Civic Hall, Winsford, Cheshire. For more details

Now news of a special event station:

GB0RCO will be in use from Rishworth School, Ripponden, West Yorkshire,
next weekend, the 4th and 5th of May. The station is to celebrate the
reopening of the Rochdale Canal at Sowerby Bridge. Operation, from 10am
on the Saturday to 4pm on the Sunday, will be on 80m and other bands,
SSB and CW, using a G5RV. Further details can be obtained from David,

The ATV repeater, GB3RT, which operates on channel RT1-2, was taken out
of service for maintenance on Monday the 22nd of April. Details of its
return to service will be reported as soon as they are known. Further

Now for the HF contest news:

This weekend, the 27th and 28th of April, the Helvetia Contest takes
place on the HF bands from 1300 UTC Saturday for 24 hours. Operation is
on both CW and SSB and brief rules are on page 21 of the April RadCom.

On Friday, the 3rd of May, an event in the RSGB Slow Speed Cumulative
contest takes place from 1900 to 2030 UTC. Operation is on CW only
between 3540 and 3580 kHz. The full rules can be found in the September
1995 edition of RadCom.

Next weekend, the 4th and 5th, the Italian ARI DX Contest takes place on
the HF bands from 1200 to 1200 UTC, using CW, SSB and RTTY. Brief rules
are on page 21 of the May RadCom.

Next some VHF contest news:

On Saturday, the 4th of May, the RSGB 10GHz Trophy Contest takes place
from 1400 to 2200 UTC on all modes.

Also on the 4th, the RSGB 432MHz Trophy Contest runs from 1400 to 2200
UTC on all modes.

And next weekend, the 4th and 5th, the RSGB 432MHz to 248GHz Contest
takes place from 1400 to 1400 UTC on all modes.

all members with the September 1995 RadCom.

And now the solar factual data for the 15th to the 21st of April:

The 90 day solar flux average on the 21st was 71 units, the same level
as last week. Electron fluence levels were mainly at a very high level
while x-ray flux levels remained at A1 units. Geomagnetic activity was
at "sub-storm" levels on most days and this activity was due to a
coronal hole in the sun's southern hemisphere. The only "quiet" day was
the 16th with an Ap index of 10 units and the average for the period was
Ap 20 units. The aa indices are now distributed on the packet network.

Now the ionospheric data for Central France. The period from the 12th to
the 18th of April saw levels increase to 7MHz on the 13th but then
decline to 5.1MHz by the 15th. However, levels increased again to 7.5MHz
on the 17th to give an average of 5.9MHz. The darkness hour lows
increased and were up to 3MHz by the 17th, making the average for the
period 2.5MHz. The daytime highs were between 1800 and 2100 hours except
on the 18th, when they were at 1300 hours. The darkness hour lows
occurred at 0400 every day except on the 17th, when they took place at
midnight.

And lastly the solar forecast. Solar activity is expected to continue at
quiet levels, and solar flux levels are expected to decline to the high
60s as the quiet side of the sun rotates in to view. Geomagnetic
activity is expected to be mostly "quiet" for the coming week.
Ionospheric MUFs for the south during daylight hours are expected to be
about 18MHz and 15MHz for the north. The darkness hour lows are expected
to be about 11MHz.

Finally in the main news, SSL has informed the Society that as of last
Wednesday morning, the latest callsigns allocated were in the M0 Alfa
Bravo and M1 Alfa Alfa series, and Novice calls in the 2 0 Alfa Oscar
and 2 1 Echo X-Ray series.
